CHENNAI: The freshers of MASC (Media Arts & Science College), Neelankarai, had an rare opportunity to listen to wisdom capsules from veteran director SP Muthuraman on Thursday. He spoke about what he had gleaned throughout his illustrious film making career. His snappy anecdotal speech had the students glued to their seats, as he went on to share those little stories that guided the success of movie stars and stalwarts we see in Kollywood today. He started with his own story of how as a young boy he left school after Class 10, with his head filled with dreams of making it big in the world of movies. He said, “As a young boy, the only thing I ever wanted to do with my life was to make movies. I managed to convince my parents that I am not cut out  for a 9 to 5 job. I started my stint  in the editing department of AVM studios under Suriya  and Shankar.”Today SP Muthuraman (77) has  75 films  and many blockbusters to his credit. He had done 28 films with Rajinikanth and 18 with Kamal Hasaan. He says, “Success lies within you.  As artists, we are not doing some routine clerical job, we are creating something new. So stay tuned and be driven. Never give up on your dreams, even if others brush you away. Hold on to your dreams, and work hard towards it. Success then comes to you.”He gave fine examples of Sivaji, Kamal and Illayaraja — of how committed  and driven they were to the art. He said, “Sivaji had to wait for three months to put on some muscle before he could act in Parasakthi. Imagine the turmoil he would have gone through in the period, but he never gave up. Today we  look up to  him as a acting superpower.”Talking about Kamal, he said, “He came into the movies, as a child artiste. When he was 10, he was too old to act as a child. But Kamal didn’t go back, he stayed on and started  acting in theatre, perfecting his emotive skills and then he worked as an assistant dance master, before he got his next break.”He also cited the example of Illayaraja, and his tryst with music, when on the first day of recording of Panchuarunachalam’s Annakilli, the power went off, all the producers  at that time thought he was jinxed, “Today, look at him, he is a maestro, who had  found his own musical heights.”He finished by saying, “Love your work, be passionate about it. When I am working on a movie, till I get the feedback from the audience on the first day of release I don’t sleep in peace. I am awake till then. At this age, if I can do it, at 18 you can all do better.”He added, “Plan your work, do your homework right. ‘’Time is ‘life’, it doesn’t come back, so use it right.” He also wished them luck for success and asked them to take Tamil cinema to the global audience. He also distributed the orientation kits to the freshers. Babu Ramaswamy, a documentary filmmaker, with 250 films to his credit, is the dean of this  college. During his work with the Regional Censor Board, Baby has reviewed over 13,000 filmsMASC offers undergraduate, post graduate and diploma certificate courses in animation, gaming, film studies, mass communication, journalism and advertising, computer graphics and visual effects.
