The monolithic Madhugiri Ekashila Hill offers a panoramic view of the city, nearby villages, hills and mountains.

Warangal, one of the largest cities in Telangana, served as the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty. The city is located 150 kilometres away from Hyderabad. The name is derived from the Telugu word Orugallu, where Oru means one and Gallu means rock. Kakatiya rulers who reigned between the 11th and 14th centuries. The monuments left by Kakatiyas include fortresses, lakes, temples and stone gateways which have attracted tourists from across the country. As per Warangal’s history, the great Kakatiya ruler, Prola established the beautiful city in the 12th century. The Kakatiyas ruled the region for about 200 years and have left famous landmarks like Warangal Fort, the Swayambhu Shambulingeshwara Temple, and many other magnificent ancient structures as lasting symbols of their architectural prowess. One such lasting structure is the Madhugiri Ekashila Hill.

The monolithic Ekashila Hill offers a panoramic view of the city, nearby villages, hills and mountains. The hill has a resemblance to a large boulder. It has a temple, watch tower and military camp at its summit. It is believed that the city was named Ekashila Nagaram because of its monolithic hill. The name of Ekashila Nagaram is thought to have originated from the large hill from the fort known as Ekashila Hill.

The hill is the first of its kind and back in the 11th century, the region was covered in forest. There is also a lake known as Mummadamma Cheruvu, which is inspired by Queen Rudrama Devi’s daughter Mummadamma, on one side of Madhugiri Ekashila Hill and a park on the other side. The park is known for its pleasant ambience and attracts a lot of tourists. Mummadamma Cheruvu also offers boating facilities in the lake.

In an interview with Local18, a local guide shared that visitors still visit this place and appreciate the marvellous sculptures which reflect the grandeur of Kakatiya art and culture. Tourists love the temple, and its structure atop Madhugiri Ekashila Hill.
