Facing flak for "mismanagement" in relief camps in riot hit Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts, a top Uttar Pradesh official on Friday said the government has made all efforts to provide succour to the victims. Highlighting details of works undertaken there, Chief Secretary Javed Usmani said, "serious efforts have been made to provide as much help as was humanly possible to the victims and their families."

"While at one point of time there were a maximum of 51,000 people living in 58 relief camps, there are 4,783 now in five camps," he said. The Chief Secretary said people belonging to nine villages living in the relief camps were not ready to return. The government has decided to give each such family Rs five lakh so that they can resettle at any place of their choice.

These villages are Phugana, Kutwa, Kutvi, Kakra, Mohammadpur Raisingh and Mundbhar in Muzaffarnagar district, and Lisaar, Laakh and Bahavasi in Shamli district.

To questions about death of children in the relief camps due to various reasons, particularly cold, he said it would be known only after the committee set up under the chairmanship of Meerut Commissioner submits its report in three to four days.

65 people had lost their lives and 85 others were injured in the riots that hit the area in September.
