Sometimes, the best of talents and people are found in the most unexpected of places. Such is the story of Mohammad Asghar Ali, a bicycle mechanic from West Bengal. Local18 exclusively reports on the man’s inspiring singing talent and writing skills, which have made him a local celebrity.
Mohammad Asghar Ali belongs to the Margam village, which is located in Birbhum district, West Bengal. Asghar is not just a bicycle repairer, but he is a man with several hidden talents. As per the reports of Local18, he practices folk songs daily, including the genre of Baul songs. He engages in practice with other members of his locality, regularly in the evenings. Fondly called Badam, Asghar is a resident of Hatibanda Para, in the Margam village. He works as a bicycle repairer from his home, which is in front of the Rampurhat-2 block.
According to Asghar, during the days, he is seen repairing equipment like a range hammer, along with other tools. By evening, he can be found with notebooks and pens along with some musical instruments. He has another hobby besides being a musician, which includes writing plays.
Talking to Local18, Asghar revealed that he was in class 3 when he participated in a play for the first time and it was the beginning of his passion. Then, in the following 35 years, he acted in several plays, visiting places like Rampurhat, Bolpur and Sahapur. Asghar pens his plays and also participates in them. So far, he has written eight plays.
One of Asgar’s specialities, Baul, is considered to be a mixture of elements like Sufism and Vaishnavism. It is prevalent in the country of Bangladesh, along with the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya. Lalon Shah, a Bengali spiritual leader, is regarded as the most influential saint in the history of Baul.
