Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known as a person who works tirelessly with just a few hours of sleep. However, it’s things like his concern for everyone, his personal touch and his empathetic nature that set him apart. While there have been several stories of Modi going all out to help people, taking time out from his asking schedule, one such instance is that of a former bureaucrat from Gujarat.
Anita Karwal recalled how Narendra Modi, then Chief Minister of Gujarat, stood by her side during a health crisis. “I was only a District Collector, posted in Ahmedabad, when I was diagnosed with pancreatitis, a rare and life-threatening condition,” she recounted.
Karwal said that her condition was critical, and she required a month-long stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). When she returned to work, still recovering, Modi gave her a call and told her that a well-known specialist doctor from Kerala will be examining her.
“Chief Minister Narendra Modi came to know about my illness and condition. Shortly after returning to the office, I received an unexpected call from the CM’s office. They informed me that a specialist doctor from Kerala, renowned for his expertise in pancreatic diseases, would meet me that evening as instructed by CM Modi,” Karwal remembers.
The doctor reviewed her medical reports and provided detailed advice on her treatment.
“This doctor was highly sought after, with long waits for his appointment. Yet, there he was, attending me on the Chief Minister’s request,” Karwal said.
She added that later that evening, Modi himself called her out of concern and asked her how the consultation went and if the doctor was good.
“Who shows such care for a junior colleague” asked Anita Karwal, talking about the level of personal attention and care from a Chief Minister to a district collector.
While Modi arranged medical consultation for Karwal, he also personally followed up to ensure her well-being.
