Gone are the day when the entire family would sit in a common room and watch soaps together. No family member has same choices, extra time to sit together and watch their favorite family show together.
Shows which were shown decade ago and liked my every family member has now been replaced by so called ‘reality shows’ like ‘Big boss,’ Nach Baliye’ and ‘Emotional Attyachaar’. These shows cater to the need of different family members, by segregating them.
We want to take you back in times and make you remember the family shows which you and your family was fond of:
Sarabhai VS Sarabhai (2004)
This magical sit-com show was directed by actor Devan Bhojani. This show became the trademark of typical family comedy show. The brilliant elite character of Ratna Pathak (Maya Sarabhai) and the way Rajesh Kumar (Roshesh) recited his poem and called her ‘Momma’ used to spread sheer laughter on screen. We so wish that this sit com makes a comeback.
Hum Log (1984)
This family show was Indian Television’s first soap opera aired on Doordarshan. Hum log was an iconic T.V show which used to address issues like family planning, women’s education and alcoholism. The moment this show used to air, viewers immediately identified and connected them with this family.
Shrimaan Shrimati (1995)
It was a popular sit com, which was also used to air on Doordarshan. Rakesh Bedi, Reema Lagoo, and Archana Puran Singh were the mean leads of the show. Keku and Koki’s constant ‘nok-jhok’ was the highlight of this serial. Remember the tune, “Shrimaaaaan jiii, pyaari Shrimatii jii”?
Hum Sab Ek Hain (1998)
This family drama was one of the finest comedies on Indian television. The story was of three brothers, their wives, their sisters and parents who used to live together. The gist or the message of the serial was ‘Ekta me anekta’. No one can forget the character of Brigadier Khachru played by Sudhir Pandey.
Khichdi (2002)
Unlike other family shows, Khichdi was different in its own sense. The usage of instant witty lines by every distinct character was the highlight of the show. It was the first T.V series to adopt a style of deadpan humor. Prafful and Hansa Parekh were the two characters which became the U.S.P of the show. Though it had second season called Instant Khichdi.
Zabaan Sambhal ke(1993)
This show was the Indian version of the British sitcom ‘Mind Your Language’. One of the most acclaimed actors Pankaj Kapoor played the role of Mohan Bharti, a hindi teacher. This show dealt with the issues like “I hate my job” and “culturle shock”.
Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka (1999)
It used to be aired on Sony Television. Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka was the first Indian Television show to complete 1000 episodes. The show highlighted the problems faced by joint families and gave solutions to find ways to cope with differences shown.
Fauji (1989)
Today’s Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan enacted in this show and girls went crazy about him. It used to air on Doordarshan and was based on the training of an Indian Army Commando regiment. It was a mega success on Indian Television.
Tu Tu Main Main (1996)
The Nok-Jhok of saas bahu was the main U.S.P of this show. Reema Lagoo as Mother-in law and Supriya Pilgaonkae as daughter in law created sheer magic on screen through their comical arguments and bickering. Every other ‘saas-bahu’ used to connect with this show.
Ye Jo Hai Zindagi (1984)
The sitcom was polular enough to grab innumerable eye-balls, due to its every single episode revolving around funny happenings. Satish Shah was the ‘trademark’ character of the show. It had a second season too but it failed to capture the fame of the first one.
