Do Diabetes Cause Nerve Damage? Doctor Explains
When blood sugar goes out of control, this sugar damages the nerves of the body.

Diabetes is a condition in which the pancreas produces less or no insulin hormone or there is insulin resistance. Since insulin digests sugar and creates energy from it, when there is a lack of insulin, the amount of sugar in the blood increases. It is one such disease that is not known at all initially.

When blood sugar goes out of control, this sugar damages the nerves of the body. This disease is called diabetic neuropathy. In this, nerve damage occurs in every part of the patient’s body. About 50 per cent of diabetes patients have the problem of nerve damage. Therefore, it is very important to control diabetes on time. To avoid such a situation, News 18 spoke to Dr. Paras Agarwal of Max Healthcare Gurgaon.

According to Mayo Clinic, there are four types of diabetic neuropathy in which more or less the same symptoms are observed. The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy first show up in the nerves of the hands and feet. This causes the hands and feet to become numb even before this. The numbness initially occurs in the hands. Due to high blood sugar levels, the walls of the small blood vessels start to weaken. Hence, there is a risk of them leaking somewhere. This makes it difficult for oxygen and other nutrients to reach the organs.

7 Simple Tips to Prevent Diabetes

1. Physical Activity-

Dr Paras Aggarwal says that first of all, every adult should incorporate regular exercise in their life. It is not necessary to go to the gym, just doing brisk exercise is enough. That is, if you do activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, rope skipping, and high and long jump for half an hour, the chances of developing diabetes are greatly reduced. And not only that, it also prevents many other diseases.

2. Healthy Diet-

The doctor also said that before having a healthy diet, one should know what not to eat. The less you eat pizza, burgers, fried foods, fast food, junk food, packaged foods, processed foods, red meat, too much sweet, too much salty, alcohol and cigarettes, the lower the risk of diabetes. Also, eat a healthy diet. Foods that are cooked naturally and contain less oil and salt. As much as possible, seasonal green vegetables, leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, colourful vegetables and fruits that contain antioxidants should be consumed.

3. Drink Enough Water –

Drinking enough water every day can protect you not only from diabetes but also from many other diseases. So drink enough water every day. Although there is no fixed norm for how much water should be drunk, you should drink two litres of water throughout the day.

4. Lose Weight –

To avoid diabetes, you should lose weight at all costs. Because obesity can also cause diabetes. Excess weight is the main cause of many diseases. Therefore, you should lose weight at all costs. If you do not lose weight with exercise and a controlled diet, you should consult an expert. Losing weight is not rocket science, nor does it take a month or two. It requires tackling many things at the same time.

Cigarettes and alcohol not only promote diabetes but also many deadly diseases. Therefore, avoid alcohol as much as possible. Do not smoke cigarettes or consume tobacco products.
