During his nearly four-decade-long association with the Hindi film industry, Dharmendra has quite successfully established himself as a synonym for brilliance courtesy his dashing personality, well built physique and of course versatility as a performer.
Moreover, over the years the actor has experimented a lot with his onscreen image, re-inventing himself along the way. Today, as Dharmendra celebrates his birthday, we present before you some of the most of the most memorable looks donned by the veteran actor during his illustrious career.
Dharam Veer: Directed by the iconic Manmohan Desai, ‘Dharam Veer’ saw Dharmendra sport a gladiator style look and create a stir amongst his fans. Released in 1977, the film also featured Jeetendra and Neetu Singh in pivotal roles. Interestingly, a young Bobby Deol was also a part of this movie. He played the younger version of Dharmendra’s charater.
Apne: A complete family entertainer, ‘Apne’ saw Dharmendra act alongside his sons Bobby and Sunny. Essaying the role of a boxing coach, he delivered a ‘Namaram-garam’ performance which floored movie buffs. Interestingly, he sported a mature look in ‘Apne’, adding a new dimension to his career.
Chacha Bhatija: A huge hit at the box office, this Manmohan Desai-directed comedy saw Dharmendra enthrall audiences, courtesy his quirky moustached look and lively onscreen antics. Released in 1977, it also featured Randhir Kapoor in the lead.
Shalimar: In a few scenes of the popular ‘Shalimar’, the actor sported a turbaned look and struck up a crackling chemistry with the glamorous Zeenat Aman.
Ghazab: Serving as proof of Dharmendra’s versatility, ‘Ghazab’ saw him essay two completely different characters with absolute ease. Also featuring Rekha in the lead, it was directed by CP Dixit.
Meharbaani: Directed by Ajit Singh Deol, ‘Meharbaani’ broght together the much loved pair of Hema Malini and Dharmendra. In the ‘Mat Pooch’ number he was seen sporting a royal look complete with elaborate robes and a beard.
Bandini: Long before Dharmendra became the resident ‘He Man’ of Hindi cinema, he played the role of an innocent young doctor in the 1960 release ‘Bandini’. Needless to say his youthful face and charm added new life to his sincere performance.
Razia Sultan: Kamal Amrohi’s highly ambitious period-drama ‘Razia Sultan’ featured Dharmendra in the role of a slave who falls in love with the titular character, which was played by Hema Malini. Unfortunately, the film could not find much success at the box office.
Jeevan Mrithyu: Regarded as one of Dharmendra’s finest big screen outings, this 1970 release featured him a bearded and turbaned avatar which exuded rawness. Interestingly, the film marked the Bollywood debut of Rakhee.
Main Inteqam Loonga: Touted as a powerful action-drama ‘Main Inteqam Loonga’ featured Dharmendra in the role of a ferocious boxer. Needless to say, he did complete justice to this role tanks to his well built physique, redefining the meaning of machismo along the way.
