Mauni Amavasya, also known as Mauna Amavasya, is a unique Hindu observance celebrated on the Amavasya (no moon day) during the Hindu month of Magha, typically falling in January-February on the Gregorian calendar. Often referred to as Magha Amavasya due to its alignment with the month of Magha, the term ‘mauni’ or ‘mauna’ signifies silence.
Mauni Amavasya holds significance as a day dedicated to spiritual practices, gaining popularity in various regions, particularly in northern India. The celebrations are vibrant in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, where Mauni Amavasya plays a pivotal role during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Designated as the day of Kumbh Parva or Amrit Yoga, it involves bathing in the holy Ganges. In Andhra Pradesh, Mauni Amavasya is known as Chollangi Amavasya, while in other regions, it is referred to as Darsh Amavasya. The day is seen as an opportunity for spiritual pursuits to attain knowledge, happiness, and wealth.
As the month of Magh approaches, Amavasya is scheduled to fall on Friday, February 9 this year. The Amavasya Tithi is scheduled from 8:03 a.m. to 4:29 a.m. on February 9. Practical measures are recommended to alleviate Pitra Dosh and invoke the blessings of ancestors during this significant period.
On Mauni Amavasya, the ideal time to perform tarpan, bathe and make offerings to ancestors begins at 8:02 a.m. as Magh Krishna Amavasya Tithi commences. Alternatively, taking a bath during Brahma Muhurta, starting at 5:21 a.m. on that day, is believed to bring virtuous benefits associated with observing a bath on Magh Shivratri.
For those planning to conduct Shraddha, Pind Daan, Brahmin feasts, charity, etc., for their ancestors on Mauni Amavasya, it is advised to commence these activities after 11 o’clock in the day, with completion by 02:30 p.m. being recommended.
During Mauni Amavasya, the auspicious Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga is present from 07:05 a.m. to 11:29 p.m. Undertaking any tasks during this time is believed to yield successful results.
To appease ancestors on Mauni Amavasya, individuals are advised to:
- Make offerings to ancestors after bathing on Amavasya Tithi.
- Worship the ancestral god Aryama following prescribed rituals.
- Recite Pitra Suktam on this day to please the ancestors.
- Individuals dealing with Pitra Dosh and seeking relief should perform Tripindi Shraddha.
Mauni Amavasya is a spiritually significant day marked by various rituals aimed at seeking blessings and appeasing ancestors.
