Vat Savitri Vrat is observed during the Jyeshtha Amavasya that coincides with Shani Jayanti. It is celebrated by Hindu married women for the long lives of their husbands and children. According to Drik Panchang, Vat Savitri Vrat will take place on Thursday, June 6. As per the legend, great Savitri tricked Lord Yama, the lord of death and compelled him to return the life of her husband Satyawan. Married women, from then onwards, started to observe Vat Savitri Vrat for the well-being and long life of their husbands. They observe fasts on this day. Pandit Manotpal Jha says that this fast is observed on Krishna Paksha Amavasya Tithi of Jyeshtha month. While talking to Local18, Manotpal Jha said that by observing this fast, the married woman receives the blessing of a happy and prosperous life for their family. On this day, the banyan tree is worshipped in the Hindu religion. It is believed that the three gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh reside in the banyan tree. Lord Vishnu resides in the stem of the banyan tree and Brahmadev is believed to reside in the roots. Lord Shiva resides in the branches. The hanging branches of the banyan tree are considered to be the form of Savitri. The entire tree is worshipped on this day.
The banyan tree remains renewable for a long time. It is also called Akshayavat. On the occasion of Vat Savitri Vrat, married women worship this tree for the long lives of their husbands. They tie a thread around the tree while chanting mantras. While listing out the significance of the Banyan Tree, Pandit Manotpal Jha claims that this tree gives more oxygen than any other tree in the world.
“At the same time, it absorbs all the dirty and polluted air on Earth and gives pure oxygen to all of us,” said Pandit Manotpal Jha. He also appeals to the citizens of the nation to plant the maximum number of Banyan Tree saplings to protect nature and purification of the environment. He said that this would help in saving the environment and religion.
As per Drik Panchang, married women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and South Indian states observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days later than North Indian women.
