Premier India paceman Mohammed Shami ran riot with the ball against England as he claimed the big wickets of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow while defending a 230-run target in Lucknow. Shami was right on the money in his first spell to give India a big advantage while defending a below-par score in the high-octane World Cup clash on Sunday.

Shami got the big scalps of Stokes and Bairstow – both in similar fashion – bowled.

The right-arm pacer troubled Stokes by beating him with some sensational delivers and castled him finally on the last ball of the 8th over. The southpaw exposed his stumps in the attempt to break shackles and open his account but it backfired for him and got out for a 10-ball duck.

Shami didn’t waste much to hurt England more as on the first ball of his next over he got the better of Bairstow, who tried to punch it but only managed to edge the ball which hit the pads before hitting the stumps.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah also claimed two wickets in two balls by dismissing Dawid Malan and Joe Root as England were on the backfoot in the 230-run chase with four wickets down for just 39.

Earlier England fast bowlers David Willey and Chris Woakes shared five wickets between them to restrict India to 229-9 after the defending champions elected to bowl in their hunt for victory.

The 2019 champions sit bottom of the 10-team table with four defeats from five matches.

With India getting to bat first for the first time in the tournament, the batters got a good opportunity to set the target. It was, however, only Rohit (87 off 101) and Suryakumar Yadav (49 off 47) who found a way to bat on a two-paced wicket while the others perished trying to force the pace.

The 91-run partnership between Rohit and K L Rahul (39 off 58) stabilised the innings after India found themselves at 40 for three in the 12th over.
