Actor Adhyayan Suman reminisced about a poignant moment when filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali became emotional after Adhyayan flawlessly delivered a five-minute monologue in the upcoming Netflix series, ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.’ Adhyayan, who made his debut in acting some years ago but faced a prolonged period of inactivity, is seeking a comeback with this new series, where he portrays a supporting character.
In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Adhyayan reflected on the fulfilling experience he had on the set of Heeramandi. He shared how he was filled with dread the night before the shoot, unable to sleep. However, his father, Shekhar Suman, ensured he was well-prepared for the scene.
“On the first day, I was giving cues to Manisha Koirala. You can’t understand Bhansali’s sharpness,” he shared.
Adhyayan mentioned that on the first day, he was giving cues to Manisha Koirala when Bhansali, known for his sharpness, commended his Urdu delivery and remarked, “Your dad taught you, didn’t he?” Shekhar praised Adhyayan’s talent as a performer, highlighting the accomplishment of delivering a flawless shot in one take, particularly under the demanding nature of the filmmaker.
Adhyayan recounted the intense moment when he flawlessly executed a five-minute long take, a feat unprecedented in Bhansali Productions, prompting Bhansali to express his admiration with tears in his eyes. Shekhar, deeply moved by Bhansali’s emotional response, revealed his own tears upon receiving a call from the filmmaker, who marvelled at Adhyayan’s talent, “He had a five-minute long take. Five minutes. This must be a first in the history of Bhansali Productions, but Adhyayan nailed it in one go. He got up from his chair, okayed the shot, and hugged Adhyayan with tears in his eyes. The next thing I know, I get a call from him and he says, ‘Where was this boy all this time?’”
Overwhelmed, Adhyayan described feeling his father’s presence empowering him during the scene, recognizing the significance of delivering that moment flawlessly. The set erupted in applause following Bhansali’s emotional reaction, encapsulating Adhyayan’s life journey of pain and perseverance, “When I was doing that scene, I swear on my career, I felt my dad’s spirit had taken control of me. I felt if I don’t deliver in that moment, it was game over. I felt that he was inside me. And that’s when sir got up and cried and kissed my hand. It went silent for five minutes, and then the entire set of 500 people clapped. My entire life flashed in front of me. All my pain, all my struggle, it came to me,” Adhyayan expressed.
‘Heeramandi,’ a period drama set in the world of courtesans, features a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Fardeen Khan. The series is set to premiere on Netflix on May 1st.
