IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack has courted controversy following its release. The series has been accused of whitewashing terror.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack released this weekend and it has drawn criticism from a section of social media users. The series, directed by Anubhav Sinha, sheds light on the heartbreaking events of the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight by terrorists. While critics have praised the performances, several netizens have accused the series of ‘whitewashing’ the events. They are also upset that the names of the terrorists have been changed.

In reality, the hijackers were reportedly named Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny, Ahmad Qazi, Zahoor Mistry and Shakir. In the series, the terrorists have been named Bhola, Shankar, Doctor, Burger and Chief. The series seemingly hinted that the terrorists had codenames.

IC-814 The Kandahar Hijack features a stellar starcast. These include Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, Arvind Swamy and Dia Mirza. The series has been well-received by critics.
