Following the lives of six friends — Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, Ross and Joey — the beloved NBC show Friends became a phenomenon over the years. Having debuted nearly three decades ago, the show is now nearing the 20th anniversary of its finale episode. While all six Friends cast members did gather for the long-awaited reunion special in 2021, it seems like the 20th anniversary might fall short with Matthew Perry’s absence. It might have been over 20 years since they had all worked together, but the equation, chemistry and friendship remained unchanged, as was witnessed in the reunion episode.
From cracking jokes both on and off camera to remembering fond memories of their shoot days, the actors got into hours of conversations and enjoyed it throughout.
The main message of Friends was to show how Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey continued to support each other’s lives through the ups and downs, finding love, growing and becoming more mature. Now, it seems like the former co-stars have adapted the same to their real lives, especially after Perry’s sudden death.
Besides being in constant touch with each other, they are reportedly also planning to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Friends finale.
What are in plans for the 20th anniversary of the Friends finale?
According to a US Weekly report, while the prospect of having a reunion without Matthew (Perry) is bittersweet as there will be a huge void, the co-stars believe “Matthew would’ve wanted them to carry on and celebrate the show. So that’s very much on their minds as they move forward.”
Quoting a source close to the development, the report further states that the actor’s death reminded them of how precious life is and the importance of catching up with each other more often. “It underlined the unbreakable bond they share and the need to look out for each other,” it added.
Noting that they are more in touch nowadays through group chats, personal chats and regular meet-ups, the source explained that the cast has had “ongoing discussions” about how to celebrate the finale anniversary. “They will most certainly be commemorating it somehow. Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc, and Schwimmer might post something on social media and get together privately,” it added.
While the close bond between the reel and real-life friends is known to the world, the group was left shattered after Matthew Perry’s sudden death last year. From sharing tributary messages for their late friend to being a part of his final journey, the group stood strong to bid their farewell.
