Chennai: It was in 1997 that Yuvan Shankar Raja entered the Tamil film industry when he composed the soundtrack of ‘Aravindham’. Even though the film failed at the box office, it helped the then 16-year-old-old music director give movie buffs a taste of his musical abilities.
In the years that followed the young prodigy found firm footing the industry courtesy some highly successful outings such as ‘Paiyaa’, ‘Oy’ and ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’. Today, as Yuvan celebrates his birthday, we tell you why he will always be leagues ahead of his contemporaries.
Yuvan has learned from the best: Being the son of legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, Yuvan was exposed to music right from a very young age. During his formative years, ‘Yuvi’ unraveled the mysteries of music by listening to songs composed by his father and other legendary musicians such as SD Burman .
After honing his skills when Yuvan decided to make a career in the entertainment industry, Isaignani became his mentor, guiding him in all professional matters. In fact, Yuvan signed ‘Aravindham’ only after the maestro gave him the green signal.
He is a complete package: Yuvan is not merely just a music composer but a highly gifted singer as well. During his career, he has crooned in films such as ‘Deepavali’, ‘April Maadhatil’ and ‘Paiyaa’ to name just a few. In fact, he even bagged a Filmfare nomination for his powerful rendition of ‘Iragai Pole’ from the Karthi starrer ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’.

Innovation is his middle name: Tamil cinema’s resident ‘Rockstar’, Yuvan is a trendsetter in every sense of the word In 2004, the young composer introduced Tamil cinema to the concept of a remix when he used a reworked version of his father’s song ‘Aasai Nooru’ in the Vishnuvardhan-directed ‘Kurumbu’. Moreover, he is also regarded as the man who kick started the trend of releasing a catchy single from a soundtrack months before the film’s release.
Yuvan is a true fighter: Even though Yuvan belongs to one of the most popular musical families of Tamil cinema, his initial years in the industry were quite difficult. The ‘youth icon’ received a lot of flak for his work in films such as ‘Velai’ and ‘Kalyana Galatta’. In fact, soon things became so bad that he wasn’t offered any projects at all.
Being a strong-willed individual Yuvan did not let these setbacks break him. On the contrary, he worked harder, waiting for an opportunity to redeem himself. And that opportunity came when he was he was roped in by Vasanth to compose music for ‘Poovellam Kettuppar’. Needless to say Yuvan did a wonderful job, silencing his critics once and for all.
