Popular actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has recently commented on the recently released Justice Hema Committee report. He mentioned that a detailed investigation should be conducted and appropriate actions should be taken if proven guilty. He also said that if the allegations that are levied by the actresses are false then the actresses should also be punished accordingly.
In 2017, an actress from the state of Kerala was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in a car. Following this incident, a committee led by former judge Hema was established to investigate the complaints regarding sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. The report was recently released by the committee after several controversies, creating a huge stir in the Malayalam film industry.
Following the release of the Hema Committee report, the number of sexual harassment accusations in the Malayalam film industry has come to the fore. Several actresses have made allegations against prominent actors, directors and producers. In response to the complaints, the Kerala government appointed a special committee to investigate the claims.
Many well-known celebrities have expressed their opinion on the report. Prithviraj Sukumaran also spoke on the recently released report. Prithviraj said, “The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) failed to address sexual harassment complaints. Ensuring a safe working environment for actresses is essential in every place.”
“A detailed investigation should be conducted based on the accusation mentioned in the Hema Committee report and appropriate actions should be taken. If someone is found guilty, they should be strictly punished. Similarly, if the allegations are proven to be false, the actresses who made the false complaints should also be punished accordingly,” the actor said.
As of now, several senior actors refused to comment anything on the Hema Committee issue. However, younger actors have been expressing constructive opinions and suggestions.
Previously, following a series of sexual harassment complaints, the Malayalam Film Association, AMMA, was dissolved. The reports suggested that 17 executive members, including actor association president Mohanlal. The officials resigned together just ahead of a planned meeting to discuss sexual harassment allegations.
