Indian 2 Box Office Day 5: S Shankar’s highly-anticipated sequel, starring Kamal Haasan, hasn’t maintained momentum at the box office. Despite predictions of a major hit, Indian 2 has received lukewarm reviews and a slow start in earnings. According to Sacnilk, the film managed to earn Rs 15 crore on its opening Sunday and just Rs 3 crore on the fifth day.
Indian 2 has now earned Rs 65.15 crore in its first five days and has grossed over Rs 117 crore worldwide. The film’s poor performance in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions has dashed its hopes, especially in the north. It is expected to be overshadowed by Vicky Kaushal’s comedy Bad Newz, releasing this Friday and starring Triptii Dimri and Amy Virk. The Hindi version saw a slight increase on Saturday and maintained steady numbers on Sunday. In Hindi, it has been facing competition from Akshay Kumar’s Sarfira. Sarfira is a remake of the Tamil film, Soorarai Pottru. Meanwhile, both films also faced off Kalki 2898 AD.
Indian 2 is a sequel to Indian, which released in 1996. S Shankar released the sequel after 28 years and it has not impressed the critics. News18’s review of the film read, “Everything looks great on paper. And Hindustani 2 is a great attempt. But it still falls short. It lacks the freshness of Hindustani and the makers try their best to make the canvas, magnitude, and scale bigger and better. Unfortunately, the film loses itself in its own ambitions. And while it stays true to its larger-than-life feel, dramatic tonality, and flamboyance, that also becomes a weak link for Hindustani 2. In short, it lacks the depth, the gravity, and the layered intricacies of the subject it had set out to explore. Halfway through it, you’ll feel as though you’re stuck in a labyrinth as Senapathy keeps aiming at one corrupt official after another giving them a cold-blooded death.”
