Tron: Ares’s shooting was set to begin in August 2023 in Vancouver, Canada but the production was put on halt due to last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike. After the strike ended, director Ronning announced that they would begin shooting in January 2024. Now Disney is aiming for a 2025 release of the much-awaited film.

The first Tron film was released in 1982. The cult classic was written and directed by Steven Lisberger. Its sequel Tron: Legacy was released in 2010. The first film starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer video game developer who was transported into the digital world called the Grid and tried to get back to reality from the virtual world. The second film followed his son Sam Flynn, played by Garrett Hedlund, who investigates his father’s disappearance and gets sucked into the Grid. It will be interesting to see how the third film progresses.

Joachim Ronning said in a statement, “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. ‘TRON: Ares’ builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

In a 2023 interview, Steven Lisberger told The Hollywood Reporter that he is involved in Tron: Ares as a mentor. The 72-year-old veteran filmmaker said, said, “The Tron team is hard at work. They are always hard at work. It’s going to happen. My goal with these things in playing the Obi-Wan role is to say the one sentence that has an impact. I try to say something useful to them without getting into the weeds.”
