Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan are well-known names in Hindi cinema. They were popular for writing dialogues that created history including Sholay, Don, and many more. The audience still remembers some iconic dialogues. Well, recently Prime Video has released a trailer for the docu-series Angry Young Men which gives a glimpse of their legacy. During the trailer release event, Javed Akhtar shared how he met Salim Khan for the first time. They met at the set of Sarhadi Lootera in which Salim Khan was seen essaying the role of lead actor.
Javed Akhtar recalled, “Mere Zindagi ke ahem film (Sarhadi Lootera) the because that is where I met Salim saheb. Salim Sahab uss picture mein romantic lead kar rahe the aur main dialogue likhta tha. Mujhe itna pareshan karte the director sahab aur producer sahab ki maine tay kar liya tha iske baad nai likhunga. But mujhe constantly jo himmat de aur appreciation diya vo Salim sahab the. Aap iss picture mein aise dialogue likh sakte hai toh aap sochiye baaki picturon mein aap kya karenge. Aap writer baniye. Toh yeh baat khatam hog aye. Uske baad itefaaq hai main bandra aa gaya dost ke yahan. Uske sath rehta, kiray wohi deta. Salim Sahab ka ghar pass mein tha. Salim sahab ke ghar jaane laga. Salim sahab ke mohabbat ke sath ek waqt ka Khanna pukka ho gaya tha.Aur phir hum baithe the aur kahaniya sochte the. Ek din hum baithe the wohi Sagar sahab jinhone Lootera banaye the, jinhone hume introduce karaya, vo aa gaye. Unhone kaha ek short story hai aur tum dono uska screenplay bana do. Humne kaha theek hai kitne paise doge. Unhone kahan Rs 5000.”
Javed Akhtar further added, “I skipped a heartbeat hearing that. We both wrote the screenplay for that, we did ghost writing for it. We met a gentleman there who knew that we had written the screenplay for that film and he asked us to go to Sippy Films. We were not sure if going because we didn’t know how they’d respond. But then one afternoon we didn’t have much to do and decided to Sippy Films go anyway, there we met Rajesh Khanna and he asked us to write the screenplay of Haathi Mere Saathi. So there was not a specific day when we decided that today we’ll start working together, to become partners. We just grew. It happened like that.”
Javed Akhtar announced he and Salim Khan are ready to reunite to write for one more film. The writer, who is one half of Salim-Javed, shared the news at the trailer launch of Angry Young Men. Javed added that they used to charge higher than the biggest actor back in the day and they would charge high even today.
Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar have written 24 films together, 22 of which were blockbusters. These include Sholay, Don, Zanjeer, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Deewar, Haathi Mere Saathi, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Trishul. The duo helped Amitabh earn the title of Angry Young Man in the 1970s.
