Kalki 2898 AD has emerged as one of the biggest films of the year. As it continues to rule the box office, director Nag Ashwin has now opened up about the decision to cast Amitabh Bachchan in his blockbuster movie.
Nag Ashwin was recently speaking to Indian Express that he revealed that Big B was his first and last choice for the role of Ashwatthama in Kalki 2898 AD. “The four main actors (Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas and Deepika Padukone) we have on board are on everyone’s wishlist. Amitabh Bachchan was my only choice for the role of Ashwatthama, who in the Mahabharata is considered to be a great warrior,” he said.
The director further opened up about Amitabh’s action sequences with Prabhas and added, “Bachchan Sir is one of the biggest stars of our country. His character is supposed to be 8-foot tall and very powerful due to the divine blessings he has received. His fight scenes with Prabhas (who plays a bounty hunter), who is considered to be one of the biggest action heroes of contemporary cinema, was a dream for us to pull off.”
Besides Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas, Kalki 2898 AD also stars Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan in the lead. Previously, director Nag Ashwin also lauded Deepika’s natural instinct for her character in ‘Kalki,’ stating, “She is the most important part of the story. We had a lot of discussions on it when we were writing as well. I think the simplest answer that we arrived at was whose character do you remove and the story does not exist? And that became Deepika’s character. Because if you remove her character, there is no story. There is no Kalki.”
Released on June 27, the film gained an overwhelming response from the audience and has earned over Rs 1000 crore at the worldwide box office. Recently, Big B also took to his social handle and penned a gratitude note for the success of the film. “T 5062 – the essence of KALKI resounds within and without .. and my gracious gratitude,” he wrote. Fans are now eagerly waiting for the sequel of Kalki.
