Nag Ashwin’s directorial venture, Kalki 2898 AD, is finally out in cinemas. The film stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in key roles. The film features Prabhas trying to capture Deepika, who is pregnant with a child who will end all evil in their time. At the same time, Amitabh Bachchan swears to protect her and the unborn child. While the film promises to be an interesting mix of mythology and science fiction, it brings us to this question: Who is Kalki?
Kalki is believed to be the tenth and final avatar of Vishnu, who will descend on Earth at the end of the Kali Yuga. Kalki will destroy all evil and establish the Satya Yuga. Kalki is often described as riding a white horse and wielding a blazing sword.
As per the Shrimad Bhagwat Purana, Kalki will be born in Shambhala in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh. Kalki will be born as a son to an ascetic Brahmin named Vishnuyasha, as per the religious text. Kalki is also mentioned in the Vishnu Purana and the Kalki Purana.
In Kalki 2898 AD, Amitabh Bachchan tells Deepika Padukone that she is carrying a “god” in her womb. The film is set in a place called Kashi, which is ruled by Yaskin, played by Kamal Haasan. Deepika Padukone plays Sumathi in the film. Her character is pregnant with the child who will prove to be the nemesis for the evil forces ruling the world. While Prabhas’ character is tasked with capturing Sumathi, Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama vows to protect her and her unborn child. The unborn child is a Kalki avatar.
As per legend, Kalki also has a wife, Princess Padmavati, who has the celestial qualities of goddess Lakshmi. It is unclear who will play Kalki and Padmavati in Nag Ashwin’s Kalki Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, the first film in this universe tells us that the sequel will explore Yaskin’s character.
Kalki 2898 AD has generated quite a buzz for itself is well on its way to become a blockbuster. News18 Showsha gave the film 4/5 stars. Our review of the film reads, “The film develops post-interval and starts to fall into place. You finally begin to understand what was happening in the first half and the plot becomes clear. It then plays on the intriguing factor and makes you wonder, ‘What will happen next?’ It combines action with visual spectacle and mythology with technology and science – which makes the film worth watching.”
“The film ends on a high note and leaves you with several questions – Who will be Deepika’s child? How will Amitabh’s Ashwathama protect Deepika? What does Kamal Haasan’s character want? Will Prabhas realise his true powers? What is Project K? How will the battle between science and mythology end? Can’t wait to watch Nag Ashwin’s Kalki world ahead,” the review also reads.
