Kamal Amrohi’s stepson Tajdar Amrohi broke his silence about Sharmin Segal’s statement comparing her performance in Heeramandi with Meena Kumari in Pakeezah. In a recent interview, he said he has watched a few episodes of Heeramandi and Sharmin’s performance cannot be compared with Meena Kumari’s film, Pakeezah, which was directed by Kamal Amrohi. He added that he doesn’t even know who Sharmin is.
Addressing Sharmin’s claim that her Heeramandi performance was inspired Meena Kumari’s ‘nothingness’, Tajdar told Zoom TV, “(Laughs) I don’t know Sharmin. But no, I can’t relate to her statement on nothingness.” He added there is a massive difference between Sharmin’s performance and Meena Kumari’s performance. He also said that Heeramandi cannot be compared with Pakeezah. “Zameen aasman ka fark hai between Heeramandi and Pakeezah. Don’t compare the two. Nobody can make Pakeezah again. Neither Meena Kumari nor Kamal Amrohi can ever be born again,” Tajdar said.
Opening up Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Tajdar said the filmmaker has always been a fan of Kamal Amrohi’s work. “Main iske baare mein bolna nahin chahta kyunki Bhansali is a big fan of my father Kamal Amrohi. In every film of his, Bhansali tries to take the shots in a very similar way as my father did.” He also said that 15 years ago, Bhansali visited Kamalistan Studio, in search of the sets that Kamal worked on. “Out of great respect, he touched the ground where my dad sat.”
