In 2021, acclaimed actress and politician Kirron Kher revealed her diagnosis with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, shocking her fans and followers who have long admired her resilience and charm in both cinema and politics. Despite the challenges posed by her diagnosis, Kher has shown incredible strength, continuing to participate in public life and fulfill her political responsibilities. Her inspiring journey was on full display at the News18 SheShakti 2024 event, where she appeared alongside her son, Sikandar Kher, and shared personal details about her battle with cancer.
Opening up about her diagnosis, Kher reflected on how the illness initially impacted her life. “I wasn’t acting. I was only doing India’s Got Talent and had moved to Chandigarh, my hometown,” she recalled. “I kept my commitment to the show but avoided everything else, including films.”
Speaking candidly about her initial fears and the difficult treatment process, Kher said, “Everyone fears that one day something like this might happen. But when it does, there’s no choice but to accept it. The treatment, with all its side effects, was harder than the illness itself. The first six to eight months were very tough, but you leave it in the hands of the Lord. I’ve always believed, even when fighting elections, that ‘This is not my fight; the Lord fights for me.'”
Kher emphasized her deep faith, noting that “we often think we are in control, but it’s the divine that truly shapes things.” She also mentioned how cancer treatment continues long after the initial diagnosis, despite the common perception that one can “beat” cancer quickly.
At the event, Kirron Kher’s son, Sikandar Kher, recalled how he first learned about his mother’s diagnosis while filming in Indonesia. He described feeling helpless due to the distance and the emotional toll the news had on him. “Life plays its cards, and you have to deal with them. At the end of the day, life goes on, and you can only be there for her,” Sikandar reflected.
In a heartfelt exchange, Kirron lightheartedly quipped that Sikandar was scared about her diagnosis, to which he responded, “I was scared, but I knew it couldn’t defeat you.” Their candid conversation showcased the deep bond between mother and son, revealing how they have supported each other through this challenging journey.
Kirron also touched on her passion for continuing her work on India’s Got Talent throughout her treatment, noting that despite the tough circumstances, she hasn’t missed a single season. “I love doing it, and it gives me joy. By God’s grace, I’ve been able to show up for every season.”
This year’s SheShakti theme, ‘Breaking Barriers,’ highlighted the incredible contributions of women leaders from a wide range of sectors, including politics, cinema, and social work. With a stellar lineup of speakers and honorees, the event was a powerful testament to the strength and influence of Indian women, both nationally and globally.
