The comedy Madgaon Express, which was released earlier this year, marked Kunal Kemmu’s debut as a director. The film stars Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi, Avinash Tiwary and Nora Fatehi. It follows three childhood friends on a trip to Goa, which unexpectedly takes them into the world of drug trafficking. While Kemmu is already a well-established actor, he decided to take a step forward and try his hand at writing and filmmaking. In a recent interview, Kunal Kemmu claimed that his wife, actress Soha Ali Khan, is the first person to hear his scripts.
During an interview with Pinkvilla, Kunal Kemmu was asked who his go-to person was for narrating his script for the first time. The actor-director said that it was his wife, Soha Ali Khan. He mentioned, “Soha is somebody who.. if not the whole script, she has to hear too many ideas and stories. Like if I have a story, and I tell her ‘You know, I have this idea’ and she’ll hear it and if I write a good scene that I think is funny then I’ll make her read that scene and narrate it again.” He went on to add that sometimes he would wake her up in the morning to narrate a dream he had.
Furthermore, Kunal shared how Soha reacts to his ideas. He mentioned, “You see if it’s making her laugh. You know, ‘Ok, somewhere there is humor.'” In cases of some dark ideas “she will be like ‘Hmm, it depends. Let’s see how it turns out’” Lastly, if Soha is not sure about a particular idea she would simply say “I don’t know.” However, he added that once he finishes writing, not just Soha but he also invites one or two friends, his sister or mother, for the narration.
Kunal Kemmu’ first directorial, Madgaon Express, was produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment. The film explores themes of friendship and self-discovery, wrapped in comedy.
