Mid Year Report Card: Marvel and DC Both Have Proved Their Worth So Far
Half the year has gone by and we have witnessed the release of three superhero film- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Wonder Woman and Spiderman: Homecoming. And, all three have managed to impress the audience.

Half the year has gone by and with it the superhero universe has expanded for good. 2017 is going down in the history of both Marvel and DC Cinematic Universe for their own big reasons. While, the Hero verse saw the first female Justice League member brought to life onscreen with Wonder Woman, breaking the ceiling and establishing the much-needed female representation, Marvel will remember 2017 as the year when Spiderman came home. Yes, the web-slinging neighbourhood Spidey, entered MCU for the first time in over 50 years of its existence in Marvel comics.

The Superhero summer started with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and so far, all the films from the Universe have only impressed the audience and box-office alike. As the year reaches its half, let's take a look at the superhero cinematic universe so far.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2

Star-Lord and his team of rogues returned to save the galaxy and this time from Star-Lord's own father- Ego. The open-ended, notorious franchise of the Marvel Universe took a soft, emotional turn in its sequel as blood-relations came to light, and new families were formed. The fact that the film defies its own league of righteous superheroes, Guardians are trouble-makers in a safe world and saviours in a troubled one. This oxymoron-ish placement of Star-lord and his team makes this franchise a delight and thus was the perfect opener for superhero year. The series is also a necessary piece of the puzzle of Avengers' final war with the ultimate evil, Thanos. With an important storyline, weaving the future of Marvel's Avengers, and some ruffian action from Star-lord, Gamora, Drax and Rocket along with Nebula, and Mantis. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 proved to be a fool-proof action-adventure. The film opened with a terrific response across the world and ruled the box-office for nearly a month.

Wonder Woman

She won our hearts with her debut appearance in DC Cinematic Universe with Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and in Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot bowled the critics as well as the fans. DC Universe's one of the most popular character's first feature film was the talk of the town since its announcement. Gal Gadot portrayal of the daughter of Zeus, Diana Prince of Themyscira was one of the best performance of the year and Patty Jenkins direction just gave it all the edge it required. A female superhero film without any male-gaze presented the feminist icon with full justification. The film achieved a milestone with its $ 100 million debuts, something no female- superhero film ever managed to do. Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot surely broke the glass ceiling in the Heroverse with a well-intentioned, critically and commercially successful Wonder Woman

Spiderman: Homecoming

Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield passed on their Spidey legacy to Marvel and they welcomed the web-slinging superhero back into their cinematic universe. For the first time, Spiderman came home in Marvel's Cinematic Universe and won the votes of the critics and young fans alike. Sassier, funnier, nerdy and a lot more relaxed than his predecessors, Tom Holland in Spider suit was what a 15-year old superhero would be. We liked him when he snatched Captain America's shield from the oldest Avengers' hands in Civil War, but fell in love with his awkwardness and naivety in the spin-off. Also, with Tony Stark aka Iron Man as his mentor and suit manufacturer, Tom's more spirited spidey swayed us with ballistic action sequences and hilarious banter. This Spiderman had the swag and that was the reason that film opened huge on the box-office with $257 million debut collection worldwide.

With stand-alone films of Thor, Thor: Ragnarok and DC's group attack with Justice League, the comic universe lovers are all set to have a gala time in the remaining year as well. How much will they be able to succeed in impressing the audience, that remains to be seen? But, as for 2017 in terms of Heroverse- so far, so good.

What's your reaction?
