Filmmaker Sibi Malayil made a mystery horror film titled Devadoothan with Mohanlal and Jaya Prada 24 years back in 2000. The movie had its moments of suspense and scares; but despite receiving positive critical reception, it failed at the box office. Devadoothan could not even recover its budget and critics called the film ahead of its time, and thus not being able to cater to the Malayalam audience of that era. Over the years, it has become a cult classic. Cashing in on the newfound popularity of the film, the makers of Devadoothan re-released the film in select theatres on July 26 and this time around, the film has been doing especially well.
It is now presented in stunning 4K visual quality. It has received an overwhelming reception from audiences. The film is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, as evidenced by its continuous housefull shows. The updated visual experience has brought new life to the movie. Director Sibi Malayil expressed his happiness and satisfaction with the renewed interest in the film. He noted that audiences have finally embraced Devadoothan in a way they did not when it was first released. Due to the success of the re-release, the number of screens for the film has now been increased from the initial 56 to 100. Apart from Kerala, the film will now also be released in Chennai, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi.
The story centres on Vishal Krishnamoorthy, an acclaimed musician, who goes back to his former college to lead a musical production. Years back, he was expelled by Madam Angelina Ignatius for supposedly playing the Seven Bells, a sacred musical instrument, which he insisted played itself. As Vishal hears the eerie tune again, he sets out on a mission to uncover the enigma of the Seven Bells.
It is interesting to note that in spite of not making money at the box office during its 2000 release, Devadoothan won three state awards including Best Popular Film, Best Costume Design and Best Music Direction
