Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, headlined by Ranbir Kapoor, was a massive blockbuster at the box office. The film was released in December last year and till today, people have not stopped talking about it. Although the film was superhit, it received mixed responses from the viewers as a section of people also called the film out for its “misogynistic” elements. Ranbir Kapoor said that while several members of the Indian film industry also expressed their disappointment to him, he was happy to have done the film as he felt stagnated in his career.
“It gets this tag, which is not true. The perception stayed with this film so Animal, if you go to the general public, they speak very fondly about the film. But there are many people who were like, ‘You shouldn’t have done this film, we’re so disappointed in you.’ Lot of people from the film industry. I just quietly apologised. I said, ‘Sorry I won’t do it next time.’ I don’t agree with them but I don’t want to, I mean, I’m in that phase in life where I don’t want to argue with anybody. If you don’t like my work, I’ll say sorry and I’ll try harder next time,” Ranbir told Nikhil Kamath on his podcast.
He also said that when he heard the story of Animal, he was scared and thought it was too bold and adulterated, which might have harmed his image as he always played a good boy in his films.
However, when asked if he would do it all over again, Ranbir said, “A 100%. See, I was kind of stagnating and hitting a saturation point in my career. I was called ‘the next superstar’ for a very long time and… I’m not saying I’m a superstar today. Unless you don’t have that continuous blockbuster films, you can’t be called a superstar. But Animal, what I think it did is, it was the correct film at the right time to kind of just take another step up because I have been kinda flatlining at the same status. That was very important for me, for my confidence. It was important for me to shift from a boy to a man.
Released on December 1, 2023, Animal revolved around a man and his toxic relationship with his father. The film showed Vijay (played by Ranbir) as an anti-hero who would go to any lengths to protect his father, including gunning down 200 people with a machine gun. However, despite his efforts, he struggled to get a seal of approval from his emotionally unavailable father (played by Anil Kapoor). The film was a box office success and earned over Rs 900 crore worldwide. After the success of Animal, Ranbir is also gearing up for the film’s sequel, Animal Park.
