Vivek Oberoi followed his veteran actor father Suresh Oberoi’s footsteps and became an actor himself. He was popular in the early 2002s and has been a part of several popular films like Saathiya, Prince and Masti among others. However, his career hit a slump after he held a press conference and said that Salman Khan had threatened him.
Speaking about how Vivek handled himself during that time, Suresh Oberoi told Bollywood Hungama, “It is his strength that he got through this. If it was someone else, they would have become an alcoholic or perhaps a drug addict. People were really against him. Media, and the people in the film industry, even the actors… sometimes when people get successful very quickly, others can’t take it.”
For the unversed, the actor, on April 1, 2003, had accused Salman of threatening him. In the infamous press conference, Vivek also claimed that Salman called him names. He later apologised to the superstar at an awards show. Last year, Vivek opened up about all that he went through which discouraged him and left him with no work.
“In hindsight, I went through a lot of stuff that was unnecessary,” he said, speaking with Hindustan Times. Talking about lobbying and ‘repressive stories’ in Bollywood, Vivek dubbed it as dark sides of the industry and said he was at the receiving end of it all.
“I know how frustrating it is, it can make one feel extremely, exhausted and tired. You feel like, I’ve just delivered an award-winning, commercially successful performance in Shoot out Lokhandwala and after that, I’m sitting at home for 14 months, not getting any work,” he added, confessing that when he was going to the troubled phase, he decided to do ‘something empowering’ and turned his attention to ‘philanthropy and business.’
In an old interview with Zoom, Salman Khan’s father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, had recounted the actor’s ugly spat with Vivek. “There is no logical or rational solution to emotional problems, and both Salman and Vivek have been emotional. Years later, they will realise that they fought over a stupid thing. Koi aur le gaya, koi aur chala and yeh wahi ke wahi hain (Someone else took her away and these two remained where they were),” Salim Khan was quoted as saying by Zoom.
