Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 has emerged as one of the biggest hits in the history of Bollywood. The film connected to the audiences thanks to its gripping storyline and powerful performances on screen. In Gadar 2, director Anil Sharma reproduced the classic songs from the original film, Main Nikla Gaddi Leke and Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava. Now, Uttam Singh, who had initially composed these songs, has taken offence and alleged that the director did not consult him before using the songs. The rendition for the sequel was developed by music director Mithoon. While Anil Sharma has denied all such claims, Uttam Singh stays true to his stance.
Uttam Singh alleged in an interview with Bollywood Hungama that the director had called him only to inform him about re-releasing the original film a few months before the sequel. Uttam Singh said, “This is wrong. Anil ji didn’t say anything to me. He had called me to his office, and when I went there, he informed me that ‘Uttam ji we are re-releasing the original film two months before the original. So, please rework the music’ Whatever the system is of today’s time with the speakers and all. That’s it, I said I will do it.” He stated, “Change can only come after a law is passed. No one can take creativity there. Inhone meri creativity le li.” (They have taken my creativity).”
Uttam Singh added that he attended a second meeting to discuss the final budget for reworking the music before the re-release of the 2001 film to fit modern equipment. However, people from Zee Music, which owns the rights, were not happy about the expenses. Anil Sharma thereafter took the music composer to another room and asked him to listen to the Gadar 2 song Khairiyat, which Uttam found was untuned. He left after altering the tune and had no further conversation concerning Gadar 2’s music.
Uttam questioned the ethics of the makers and said, “If he (Anil) says that he made me hear the songs, then it’s wrong. No permission was taken from me. You take the song, do whatever you want. You say you (have) the rights? Ok agreed, but there is something called ethics as well. What is your identity? Gadar. So, Gadar is not just a film, right?”
Earlier, as the controversy over the film music grew, Anil Sharma denied all claims of not consulting Uttam Singh regarding Gadar 2 music. He said in a report by the Times of India, “I showed Uttamji all the songs. Mujhe hairani hai ki unhone ab aisa statement diya hai (I am shocked he gave such a statement).” He added that the music rights legally belong to the label. Further, he stated that he shared a good bond with Uttam Singh but was shocked upon hearing what he had said and would try to speak with him.
Gadar 2 was released on August 11 and starred Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in lead roles.
