Director Karan Johar recalled his first ever meeting with Shah Rukh Khan. The filmmaker revealed that he met Shah Rukh when he was an aspiring fashion designer and one of the first things he advised Shah Rukh was to unbutton a few buttons of his shirt and allow his Adam’s Apple to be seen. Intrigued by his advice, Shah Rukh called in Aditya Chopra and asked him who Karan was and why was he commenting on his Adam’s Apple.
Speaking with acclaimed fashion designer Prabal Gurung, Karan revealed he was asked to convince Shah Rukh to switch jeans brands and the conversation eventually turned towards his Adam’s Apple. “I remember my first meeting with Shah Rukh Khan. It was crazy because I remember I was an assistant for DDLJ. I told him, ‘Oh, you know you’re wearing Wrangler jeans. You should wear Levi’s jeans. They’ll just fit you better. He was stunned. I didn’t know what gave me that entitlement I had. And I said, ‘Oh you have an Adam’s apple, you must open your shirt 2-3 buttons.’”
Karan revealed that while Shah Rukh nodded along, he wanted a moment to speak with Aditya soon after. The now-Yash Raj Films head introduced Karan as a ‘townie’, someone who is raised in South Mumbai. “(Shah Rukh) just kept nodding, and then he said, ‘Will you give me a moment, can you call Adi in?’ I went outside, and he said, ‘Yeh kaun hai? kahan se aaye? Aur yeh mere Adam’s apple ke baare mein kyun baat kar raha hai?’ So Adi told him, ‘He’s a townie, they all talk like this.’ I was being very genuine. Eventually Shah Rukh started finding amusement in all these things that I was saying and he was like, ‘What do you want to do?’ I was like, ‘I want to be a designer,’” the filmmaker shared.
Over the years, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan became close friends. They not only worked together on several movies, including Karan’s debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and his other releases like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and My Name Is Khan, but consider each other as family as well.
