Anupam Kher is one of the few actors who flourished in the art of adapting to the changing phase of cinema over the last three and a half decades. From comic and serious dramatic roles to playing menacing villains, Anupam Kher has proved his mettle in almost all kinds of roles. Most fans know that he has been married to actress and BJP MP Kirron Kher for 38 years now, but few know that he had been married earlier as well.
Anupam Kher’s marriage to Kirron Kher was the second one for both. Kiran Kher’s first husband was Gautam Berry. Their marriage lasted six years and they have a son together Sikander Kher, who is also an actor. They separated in 1985, four years after Sikander’s birth.
Meanwhile, Anupam Kher had been married to actress Madhumalti Kapoor earlier. They married in 1979 and separated in the same year, with the marriage lasting less than a year. Anupam had met the gorgeous Madhumalti Kapoor while studying together at the National School of Drama. It is strange that during their stint as students at NSD, both had just friendly feelings towards each other and nothing more.
Anupam and Madhumalti never developed a romantic interest in one another despite attending classes and taking part in college activities. Reportedly, Anupam and Madhumalti’s arranged marriage took place in 1979 when their respective families came into contact. It is believed that the two friends decided to give marriage a chance under family pressure. Anupam Kher was adamantly opposed to the union, and soon cracks started taking place in the marriage. Within a year, Anupam and Madhumalti filed for divorce, and the couple parted ways to pursue separate interests.
Anupam Kher met his soulmate and aspiring actress, Kirron Kher, while he was working in Chandigarh Theatre Group. They fell in love and married in 1985. Meanwhile, Madhumalti married writer-director Ranjit Kapoor after her separation from Anupam Kher but even this marriage lasted for only a year. Madhumalati is also active in the film world. She was last seen in Brahmastra. Earlier she has done supporting roles in ‘k Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, De De Pyaar De, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Gadar Ek Prem Katha.
