A preliminary railway probe into the Sunday night accident in Andhra Pradesh concluded that the driver and the assistant driver of the Rayagada Passenger train were responsible for the collision as it passed two defective auto signals violating norms. Both crew members were killed in the accident.
As per a joint note, verified by CNN-News18, the loco pilot and assistant loco pilot of the Rayagada Passenger train were responsible for the fateful collision.
“Train 08504 Passed the Signal “Without Observing the Condition of Subsignal. Subsequently, the Next Auto Signal Was Passed in the “On Condition,” Resulting in a Rear Collision,” the note read.
The first train, the Visakhapatnam Palasa Train, followed the procedure on an automatic section halting on the Red signal for 2 minutes and leaving it with a restricted speed of 10KMPH. However, the Rayagada Passenger train which was coming on the same track and in the same direction passed one sub-signal and one signal without observing its condition.
It concluded that the Rayagada passenger train (08504) hit the Visakhapatnam Palasa passenger train (08532) from the rear due to the crew of the former passing two defective auto signals.
Signed by seven experts, the preliminary report also said they carefully examined the accident site, available evidence, statements of officials concerned, data logger report and the speedometer chart.
According to the railway norm, the train should have stopped for two minutes at the defective auto signals and then started at 10 kmph which it didn’t do, leading to the collision, the report said.
The Rayagada Passenger train hit the Visakhapatnam Palasa Train from behind at 7 pm on October 29 on the Howrah-Chennai line in Kantakapalli in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh, killing 14 and injuring over 50 train passengers.
