India women’s cricket team created history with a gold medal triumph after beating Sri Lanka women’s by 19 runs in the Asian Games at Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field, Hangzhou. It was another clinical performance from India in the bowling department as they restricted Sri Lanka to 97/8 in 20 overs. Titas Siddhu was the star performer for Women in Blue as he claimed three wickets for just 6 runs in her four overs.
The gold medal in Asian Games is a huge prize for the Indian women’s cricket team after enduring a heartbreak at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, where they ended up with the silver medal after losing to Australia.
Harmanpreet Kaur returned to the Indian team to lead in the final as they won the toss and elected to bat first. It was not an ideal batting track with uneven bounce from the surface which made batters’ life difficult.
Smriti Madhana and Jemimah Rodrigues made 46 and 42 respectively, before India lost wickets at the fag end to finish with 116/7. Titas, Player of the Match in this year’s U19 Women’s T20 World Cup final for her spell of 2-6, picked three wickets in a spell full of accuracy, including a double-wicket maiden.
Left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad took two wickets while Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar and Devika Vaidya had a scalp each to contribute in India’s win in their first-ever participation in the event as Sri Lanka ended up at 97/8.
The fans were elated after India’s historic World Cup triumph as the Women in Blue garnered praise on social networking site X, formerly known as Twitter.

Titas, who is just four days shy of his 19th birthday, bowled a devastating first spell and finished with superb figures of 4-1-6-3 to play a big role in restricting Sri Lanka to 97 for eight in 20 overs.
She had an able ally in leg-spinner Devika Vaidya (4-0-15-1), who kept a tight leash on the islanders.
Left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad (3-0-20-2) and off-spinner Deepti Sharma (4-0-25-1) started off badly but were on target during the back-end as Indian women always looked in complete control.
