India are yet to win a Test series in South Africa and the Rohit Sharma-led side will be aiming to change history when they take on the tough assignment later this month.
India last toured the rainbow nation in 2021-22 when they ended up throwing away a 1-0 lead to lose the three-match series 2-1.
The upcoming tour is the final in a series of high profile challenges that Rohit and co have faced this year including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, ICC World Test Championship final, ODI World Cup among others.
Former allrounder Irfan Pathan feels that should the team end up winning the South Africa Test series this time around, it will put Rohit in the top-most category of stars in the history of Indian cricket.
“If Rohit Sharma is able to conquer South Africa, his name will be kept top-most in India’s cricket history as captain and player because only he has the key to win both these matches. He is both an opener and a captain. If you play out the new ball, your other batters will get the chance to shine. That’s why you should remove the shine from the new ball,” Pathan said on Star Sports.
“He went fully prepared and batted amazingly in the Test series when he went to England. I feel you will see Rohit Sharma preparing with the same passion before he goes. Rohit’s challenge will be to play out the new ball, score his runs and take his team forward. We have two big brothers in this team, Rohit and Virat Kohli. There will be a lot of dependency on both of them,” he added.
Both Rohit and Kohli are currently taking a break from international cricket following the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup. They have been rested from the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour and will make their competitive return through the Boxing Day Test.
