“Which umpire was at the bowler’s end when Kumble took his 10th wickets in a Test innings against Pakistan in February 1999, in Delhi,” the question read. The options for answers were – Piloo Reporter, S Venkataraghavan, David Shephard, and AV Jayaprakash.

Talking about the match, India entered the game down 1-0 in the two-Test series. Batting first after winning the toss, India posted 252 runs on the board. While the total may not have been much, Pakistan failed to take any lead and were bowled out at 172 thanks to Kumble’s 4/75 and Harbhajan Singh’s 3/30.

With an 80-run lead, India posted another 339 runs on the board to set a target of 420 runs for the visitors.

Pakistani openers got their team off to a good start in the fourth innings, putting up 110 runs on the board before Kumble got India their first breakthrough in the form of Shahid Afridi.

The hosts were bowled out for 207 runs, giving India a 212-run victory and a spot in the record books for the Indian spinner.

Recalling the historic match, Anil Kumble, in a recent interaction with Jio Cinema, called the wicket of Saeed Anwar the toughest. “I think Saeed Anwar (on his toughest wicket during the spell). He was batting really well – was I think 50 or 60-odd and was looking comfortable.”

Anil Kumble bid adieu to international cricket as the highest India wicket-taker in the test. The leg spinner claimed 619 wickets from 132 matches.
