According to reports, the particular date of January 22 is chosen as it coincides with the Karma Dwadashi, a date dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
It is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu had taken the form of a turtle, in one of his avatars.
According to sacred scriptures, Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of a tortoise and helped in the churning of the ocean. The ‘kurma’ avatar is the second form Lord Vishnu took in order to help the world during testing times.
The Kurma avatar is preceded by the Matsya avatar, which is believed to be the first avatar of Lord Vishnu and is succeeded by the Varaha avatar.
The fourth incarnation of the deity is known as the Narashima avatar and is followed by Vamana and Parashurama avatars.
Lord Shri Ram is believed to be the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, while Balrama and Shri Krishna are the eventual incarnations of the holy being.
