'Tilak Varma Brings Two Dimensions of his Game to the Team - Batting And Leadership Skills': Abhishek Nayar
Tilak Varma has played 11 T20Is thus far in which he scored 237 runs at an average of 33.86.

Former India cricketer Abhishek Nayar heaped praise on young batting sensation Tilak Varma as he pointed out he has the leadership skills of the Hyderabad star which many have not seen yet. Varma has made a strong statement with his performance on his debut tour in the West Indies earlier this year which helped him get a place in the squad for Asia Cup 2023. The southpaw has played 11 T20Is thus far in which he scored 237 runs at an average of 33.86. His strike rate of 139.41 impressed many cricket critics and fans.

Nayar pointed out that the two important dimensions of Varma’s game are batting and leadership skills.

“Tilak brings two dimensions of his game to the team. Yes, fielding is a part of it and yes, he can bowl, but what is really important when I say two dimensions are his batting and leadership skills,” Abhishek Nayar was quoted as saying to Jio Cinemas.

Varma grabbed the limelight while playing for Mumbai Indians in the last couple of seasons with his consistent performances in the middle-order. He has become a reliable batter for the five-time IPL champions and scored 343 runs in 11 matches last season at an average of 42.88. While on his debut season, the southpaw made an instant impact with 397 runs in 14 matches.

Nayar emphasised Tilaks’ smart cricketing break which India and Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has also pointed out on several occasions.

“What you always see with Tilak Varma is fearlessness. He is a young player, but what I have always heard, Rohit Sharma often used to say that he is a great cricketing brain. Because when he plays for MI, he gives good suggestions to Rohit. That part of Tilak is going to be great for Indian cricket,” he added.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav will have to suppress the massive disappointment of a World Cup final defeat somewhere in the deeper confines of his heart while leading a sprightly bunch of ‘Gen-Next’ stars against a strong Australian side in a five-match T20 International series, starting on Thursday.

The young guns like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Tilak Verma, Jitesh Sharma and not-so-young Mukesh Kumar have all made their international debuts in past few months but their first real Test will be against a very strong Australian T20 side which will have some of their World Cup heroes like opener Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, leg-spinner Adam Zampa and former skipper Steve Smith in its ranks.
