Australia has had a poor start to their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign with back-to-back defeats. They suffered a thumping six-wicket defeat at the hands of India in Chennai before being blown apart by South Africa in Lucknow.
The five-time world champions thus find themselves in the bottom half of the Cricket World Cup points table and are one of the three teams left in the competition yet to register a win at the ODI showpiece.

Australia captain Pat Cummins is facing the heat for the below-par performances and for dropping wicketkeeper Alex Carey for the South Africa fixture.
Australia batting legend Michael Clarke who captained them to ODI world cup title win in 2015 has now claimed that he’s heard the team management is planning to bench Cummins for the crucial Sri Lanka contest to be played today in Lucknow.
“I heard last night that Pat Cummins is not going to be selected for this game,” Clarke was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.
“We’ve dropped our wicketkeeper… who is one of the most important people in your squad. So he got one game and got dropped. Now there’s talk we’re going to drop our captain,” he added.
Clarke criticised Australian team for being clueless about their best playing XI going into the world cup.
“So in in two games our two most significant players in a squad on tour are going to be left out. Do you not know your best XI before you get to a World Cup? If Alex Carey is only given one game, he shouldn’t be in India. They shouldn’t have taken him. If Pat Cummins is going to get dropped and not captain the team, then you guys have selected the wrong captain,” he said.
In both their defeats, Australia batters have failed to fire with the team yet to post a 200-plus tota.
