Govt sends letter to Communists, doesn't say if its going to IAEA.

New Delhi: The Left Front will by July 10 give President Pratibha Patil a letter withdrawing support to the UPA government, a senior leader announced on Monday.

Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas said the four Left parties had unanimously decided withdraw support to the Government as it was clear that it was proceeding with the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Biswas made the statement after the Government on Monday refused to meet a Left deadline and clarify if it was finalising the India-specific safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take forward the India-US nuclear deal.

In its reply to the Left parties, the Government urged the Communists to attend one more meeting of the UPA-Left nuclear committee on July 10. The CPI-M-led Left parties had asked the government to clarify by Monday if it was going to the IAEA.

“The letter is non-committal,” said RSP general secretary T J Chandrachoodan.

"We have received the letter. We will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) to decide on the future course," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said here.

The Left parties have said that they would withdraw support to the Government if it carried the India-US nuclear deal forward, but have said announced they would not do so when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is away in Japan.

Singh left for Japan on Monday morning to attend the G-8 summit where he is expected to meet US President George W. Bush. Singh is scheduled to return on Thursday.
