AIMIM Debuts in UP Civic Polls, Wins Seats in Various Municipal Bodies

Lucknow: Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) opened its account in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, winning seats in various civic bodies in the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party swept the municipal bodies in the state, winning 12 of 14 mayoral posts.

AIMIM managed to bag 12 municipal councillor posts, four nagar palika parishad member posts and 4 nagar panchayat posts, as per the data provided by state Election Commission.

The party’s mayoral candidate from Firozabad, Mashroor Fatima, was a runner up and gave a good fight to the winning candidate Nutan Rathore from BJP. Rathore got 98, 392 votes which equals to 34.99% vote share while Fatima got 56, 536 votes, equalling 19.99% vote share. The total voting percentage of Firozabad stood at 56.16%. Samajwadi Party candidate, Savitri Gupta, got 45,925 votes and Bahujan Samaj Party's Payal Rathore got 41, 528 votes.

State co-ordinator for AIMIM, Shaukat Ali, said the party’s win is a reply to all those who had termed AIMIM as an agent of BJP. “Our only mayoral candidate was from Firozabad and we are runner up for the post. Similarly our candidates have won in more than 20 seats at many places in Allahabad, Firozabad, Kanpur and other cities as well,” he said.

Ali also hit out at the SP who had accused AIMIM for being an ‘agent’ of the BJP, party of the ruling party’s strategy to divide the anti-BJP vote, particularly Muslims.

“We would like to ask Samajwadi Party who is real agent of BJP? They had fielded their candidates from everywhere. Then who is the real agent of BJP? The winning of AIMIM candidates is the win of Dalits and Muslims,” he said.

“We had given the Dalits the highest ticket in the election because we belong to the Dalit Muslim-deprived society,” he added.

Earlier in 2012, AIMIM had contested the Nanded Waghala Municipal Corporation election in alliance with Mayawati’s BSP. But the tie-up didn’t not give much benefit to the AIMIM to expand their footprint in the state.
