New Delhi: In Maharashtra urban body polls, BJP and Shiv Sena have appropriated between themselves both treasury and opposition space leaving very little for the others.
The main opposition, Congress has incurred losses across the state. NCP has even lost in its strongholds in Western Maharashtra including Pune, Nashik and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

As in Orissa recently, where BJP emerged as the main opposition to the ruling BJD in local body elections, electoral outcome in Maharashtra may well be attributed to the success saga emanating out of note-bandi. As all roads these days lead to UP, BJP may want to use this outcome to bolster its campaign in the high stake battle in the Hindi heartland.
A quarter of the Mumbai’s population comprises of migrants from North India. Traditionally, minorities and migrants- especially from UP and Bihar- have been Congress’ main votebank in Mumbai against BJP-SS combine.Also Read: Shiv Sena Still Short of Halfway Mark in Mumbai: Two Likely Scenarios
A senior BJP in his assessment leader feels that youth amongst the migrants shifted to BJP this elections to give the necessary impetus to the party surge in the city.
Obviously, BJP would want the message to travel far and wide. Atleast as far as UP.
“The older generation among the migrants however may have have stuck to the Congress. Which is why Congress has been able to win more than 30 seats.”; says the leader BJP leader closely associated with the elections.
