New Delhi: Flat number 175 on South Avenue looks like any other flat in the same area. The exclusive residential area of Members of Parliament, next to Rashtrapati Bhawan is one of the most beautiful areas in the national capital.
After the death of a domestic help allegedly at the hands of Jagriti Singh, the wife of BSP MP Dhananjay Singh, flat number 175 has become a notorious place. Some people in the area are even calling it the torture chamber of Delhi.
While one of unfortunate domestic helps, Rakhi, died of injuries allegedly inflicted on her by Jagriti, two others Meena and a minor boy have been hospitalised. They are in a very traumatic state.
Dhananjay Singh has always been a notorious politician with dozens of cases slapped against him in Uttar Pradesh. The cases include murder, attempt to murder, extortion etc. He had spent sometime in jail and has been out of bail.
After the death of his first wife under mysterious circumstances, he married Jagriti Singh. A trained dentist working at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, Jagriti used to allegedly torture all her maids. Police are trying to find out if she has killed anybody before this horrific incident.
According to the survivors of this torture chamber, she was the cruellest woman, who could do anything to terrorise her maids. A police officer who is investigating the case said, "She would beat her maids and other servants regularly. She had no sympathy, no fear of anybody. She was like a devil."
Her maid Rakhi, who died of injuries, was the most unfortunate poor woman. A widow with no backing and nowhere to go, she had to endure the most unbearable cruelty for months. She had branded her buttocks with a hot iron bar. Because of that she could not even sit or sleep.
Another maid Meena, who is now undergoing a treatment at the RML hospital for multiple injuries all over the body, was also branded with hot iron bars and grilles.
According to a 17-year-boy rescued by the police Jagriti had a iron grille at her flat. She would brand them with that regularly. He told the police that she would spit on their food and force them to eat from the floor like animals. She would even force them to look for food in the dustbins.
The boy explained many such horror stories to the police. According to him Jagriti even tried to cut his tongue by using an iron clothes pin and he bled for hours. She never allowed her maids and servants to step out of the house and always kept them in a locked flat.
The 'doctor death' Jagriti had told them that the guards posted outside the house would shoot them, if they dared to go out or escape.
She had installed CCTV cameras even in toilets to keep a close watch on her servants. According to the rescued maid and servant she would often tell them that she was not afraid of anybody and was ready to do anything to assert her authority.
She had even unsuccessfully contested the 2012 UP Assembly elections. Some reports suggest that she became violent after she lost the polls.
The court has taken the incident seriously and asked the police to conduct a thorough probe. While she has been booked for murder, her husband MP has been booked for concealment of evidence. They have also been charged with employing a minor, attempt to murder, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, causing disappearance of evidence, omission to give information and offences under Juvenile Justice Act.
As the investigation progresses, more horrific details are likely to emerge. Dhananjay Singh's advocates are now trying to put the blame entirely on his wife.
They are insisting that the MP had no role in the torture of maids and servants. They claim that he used to stay at a different place for the past one and a half years and the torture of maids forced him to file for divorce.
But, the rescued servants confirm that he used to visit the flat regularly. The couple told the police that they had hired maids from AGR placement agency in Chirag Delhi.
But, Delhi Police says there is no such agency and officials are trying to find out who supplied the unfortunate maids to them. The person who answered the police calls replied that he was in Kolkata and denied links to the agency.
According to some reports Dhananjay Singh knew Jagriti much before the alleged suicide of his first wife. Some say his first wife's suicide was actually a murder and it has to be investigated properly.
BSP chief Mayawati also disliked him and even expelled him from the party once. Singh was allegedly running a reign of terror in Jaunpur by murdering and threatening his rivals.
Many residents of Jaunpur are now hoping that he will not come out of jail in near future.
