New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has decided to ask all political parties to arrive at a consensus on giving the people the "right to recall" following the recent exposure of a BJP MP's alleged involvement in the human trafficking scam.
Chatterjee told reporters in Banglore about his thoughts on amending the Representation of the People Act to empower voters with powers to "recall" their elected representatives at a meeting of the floor leaders.
"Some national endeavour has to be set in to cleanse impurities in the system. Otherwise people will loose faith in Parliamentary democracy, which should not happen," as quoted by PTI, Chatterjee said.
Referring to the Babubhai Katara case in which the MP is facing charges of human trafficking for his attempts to take along with him a woman and a boy using fake passports, he said he would await the judiciary's verdict to decide on the future course of action.
Refusing to compare Katara's case with the earlier infamous "cash for queries" scam in which MPs involved were expelled, Chatterjee said, "It was a collective decision of the Joint Parliamentary Committee".
"Society should condemn such incidents... people should exercise their rights and punish such people," he noted.
