New Delhi: The Congress core group meeting on Thursday evening at party President Sonia Gandhi's residence held consultations in the wake of the Supreme Court quashing PJ Thomas's appointment as CVC that has come as a major embarrasment to the government.
The order came as a big blow to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government which had on January 27, 2011 made an embarrassing claim in the Supreme Court that it was not aware of the full facts of the allegations against Thomas when his name was cleared for the post of CVC.
Earlier, sources had told CNN-IBN that there was no question of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or Home Minister P Chidambaram resigning following the Supreme Court verdict. The Prime Minister said he respected the Supreme Court verdict on Thomas.
The Supreme Court ruling is believed to have come up for discussion at the hour-long meeting of the Congress Core Group headed by Gandhi.
The meeting also assumes significance as it was the first after the announcement of Assembly elections in five states - West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.
It came in the backdrop of failure of the Congress to clinch a deal with the DMK in Tamil Nadu for the April 13 Assembly polls.
Incidentally, Home Minister P Chidambaram, a senior leader from Tamil Nadu, is understood to have come to the meeting after holding negotiations with Ghulam Nabi Azad, the AICC General Secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu, on the seat-sharing talks.
The DMK has scheduled a crucial meeting of its action committee on Saturday to take stock of the political situation in the wake of the logjam on seat-sharing talks with the DMK.
The issue of separate Telangana has also become ticklish for the Congress leadership in recent days with its proponents and opponents raising the issue in Parliament vociferously.
