Congress Should Stop Blaming EVMs, It Shakes Public Faith in Democracy: Yogendra Yadav

New Delhi: Psephologist-turned politician Yogendra Yadav has a piece of advice for the Congress – stop raking up the EVM tampering and work on how to counter the BJP election winning machine.

Speaking to News18, Yadav said that all the EVM tampering or malfunctioning allegations achieve is bring down the faith of the people in democracy and demoralise the voters.

“The least the Congress can do is not bring down the faith of people in the electoral process by alleging large scale EVM tampering,” said the former AAP leader and Swaraj Abhiyan co-founder.

Hours after the election trends were clear in Gujarat, a section in the Congress party had started blaming the EVMs for their loss. Congress workers also staged a protest outside the party office in Delhi alleging that the BJP won the elections by unfair means.

Patidar leader Hardik Patel even said the Congress coalition was able to win 80 seats as the government wanted it to be a close contest to remove doubts over rigging.

But Yadav was dismissive of the agitation. “Mr. Amit Shah’s BJP party is the most efficient election machine. It is very difficult to counter them. Rahul Gandhi and his team have to accept this. Talking of EVMs over and over again only demoralises voters,” he said.

Even before the poll results were declared, the Congress had filed a plea in the Supreme Court, asking it to direct the Election Commission to count and cross verify at least 25 per cent of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) with the EVM votes polled in the election.

Although the SC rejected the petition, the EC in its random vote count on EVMs and paper trail slips carried out in all 182 assembly seats found there was a “100 per cent vote match”.

“With VVPATs being used, I assure you there can be no tampering with EVMs,” Chief Election Commissioner, Achal Kumar Joti, assured. Political analyst and author, Ajoy Bose said, “Congress has to rise above the rhetoric of EVM tampering.”
