New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi led the party's leaders and senior members in a march to the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday against rising intolerance.

Congress submitted a memorandum to the President. Speaking to media persons after submitting the memorandum, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said, "Sinister campaign is being unleashed to create social and communal tension‎ in the country."

The opposition party also expressed its gratitude to the President for speaking out "strongly and unequivocally against forces of prejudice, bigotry and intolerance," its memorandum said while expressing deep regret that the Prime Minister had not deemed it fit to do so.

"While the President has spoken, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is silent which clearly indicates his tacit support to such activities," Sonia told reporters after meeting Mukherjee.

Rahul Gandhi also hit out at Prime Minister's silence. "People are being lynched and killed, PM doesn't like it when others speak up", said the Congress Vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Over 100 Congress leaders took out the march to the President's House. Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Randeep Surjewala, Rita Bahuguna, Sachin Pilot, were among leaders who joined the protest march.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi had met the President on Monday evening. The march comes in the backdrop of protests by artistes, writers and scientists over the alleged rising intolerance reflected in the Dadri lynching, beef row and other such incidents.
