Kanpur: With the aim to cash in on the cricket world cup fever, independent candidates contesting the UP assembly elections were vying with each other to get cricket bat as their symbol.
When election symbols were allotted to the candidates at the district election office on Friday, a large number of independents sought the cricket bat symbol, even though a long list of symbols, including hand pump, scissors, candles, gas cylinder, television, rail engine, aeroplane were offered to them.
Gas cylinder closely followed bat as the preferred choice of the candidates.
On the last day of withdrawal of nominations for the first phase of assembly elections, the district administration allotted symbols to the contesting candidates till late Friday evening.
The party of former IIT students, Bharat Punah Nirman Dal, got book as their symbol.
Polling for the first of phase of elections in UP will take place on April 7.
