Crisis Deepens For AAP: As Kejriwal Surrenders on June 2, ED Prepares For Action Against His 'Accused' Party
The AAP may lose some of its assets, while some of its bank accounts may be frozen by the directorate as part of penalty actions under the PMLA.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to surrender and return to judicial custody on June 2 as the crisis continues to loom large over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

After the court takes cognizance of the prosecution complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate on May 17 mentioning AAP as an ‘accused’ in connection with Delhi government’s liquor policy case under the sections of the PMLA, the directorate is likely to take follow up actions, CNN-News 18 has learnt.

As the trial begins, the directorate may initiate legal measures to recover the proceeds of the crime which, according to the investigators, is around Rs 100 crore. The party may lose some of its assets, while some of its bank accounts may be frozen by the directorate as part of penalty actions under the PMLA.

According to a senior officer of the directorate, the legal actions against the party will start after the court takes cognisance of the prosecution complaint, known as chargesheet. Arvind Kejriwal, who has been the chief of the party, will also have to face the legal actions as he is the prime accused in the case.

On May 17, the Enforcement Directorate filed its ninth supplementary chargesheet in connection with Delhi liquor policy case naming Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his party AAP as prime “accused”. AAP has become the first political party in India to be charged under the PMLA.

The party is likely to see several administrative and political implications as it may lose its status if the ECI receives complaints from other parties seeking action or it may also see its assets and bank accounts being attached, as part of routine PMLA case proceedings, added sources in the agency.
