Ghazipur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that he relates to the inconvenience faced by the common man due to demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and promised that it will not go in vain.

Addressing his first public rally in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh post the demonetisation drive, Modi said,"I will act as the custodian of the money of the poor people."

He also said that the poor are sleeping in peace while the corrupt are taking sleeping pills.

Attacking the Congress, Modi said that the its leaders should not misguide the people on the matter of black money. "Those who are spreading lies should know that it is a fight against corruption," he added.

"Congress declared emergency during its rule for 19 months, during which it shut down newspapers and extorted money. They did this to save Indira Gandhi then, how can they call me corrupt while they are," questioned Modi.

Hailing the bank employees for working 18-20 hours in a day, the PM sought the support of the people for only 50 days.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the PM for claiming that poor people are sleeping peacefully.

"In his speech, the PM has said that the poor are sleeping peacefully which is an insult to commoners. My humble suggestion to the Centre is not to hit the poor people like this," she asserted.

PM Modi was in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh where he flagged off the weekly Shabd Bhedi Superfast Express from Ghazipur to Kolkata and inaugurated the newly constructed perishable cargo centre.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for doubling of the railway track between Ghazipur and Ballia, rail-cum-road bridge on the river Ganga on Mau-Tadighat rail route.
