Bangalore: JDS chief H D Deve Gowda on Friday demanded that the Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj exercise his constitutional powers and dismiss the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa-led BJP ministry in the wake of Supreme Court
setting aside disqualification of 16 MLAs.
Terming the disqualification order as an act of "fraud played on the Constitution", the former Prime Minister appealed to Bhardwaj to take a decision whether "this government should continue or to be dismissed".
"Supreme Court has virtually passed strictures on Yeddyurappa and also action of Speaker K G Bopaiah," he said welcoming the apex court order quashing Bopaiah's decision to disqualify 16 MLAs ahead of the no confidence motion last year which had ensured survival of Yeddyurappa government.
Gowda said the Speaker should resign on his own to enhance the prestige of the office of Speaker. Otherwise it would further bring down dignity and decorum of the House, he said.
"The Yeddyurappa government has convened an emergent legislature session to commit another constitutional fraud to expel 15 opposition party MLAs in connection with the rumpus that was witnessed in the state assembly during the
election of Speaker last year", Gowda said.
He appealed to the Governor not to permit the session.
Yeddyurappa on Friday announced that government will hold a ten-day budget session from May 16.
